Why Northern Kentucky lawns get hit year round
The older river cities sit on moisture-retaining clay loam in the Ohio River corridor, and damp clay is exactly what earthworms prefer. Since earthworms make up most of an Eastern ground mole's diet, that soil supports a denser mole population than the drier, sandier ground further south.
Lot size changes how the damage reads. On the tighter historic lots in Covington and Newport, a single tunnel system can cross most of the visible lawn, so the damage looks severe quickly. On the larger suburban lots around Florence, Edgewood and Independence, the same animal spreads its runways out and homeowners often miss it until the mounds appear.
Because these moles never hibernate, there is no off season. Mature tree canopy keeps the ground workable through the cold months, and we trap Northern Kentucky properties in December and January as a matter of routine.
